Sand Rivers Selous

The grand dame of the Selous Safari circuit, along with Beho Beho, Sand Rivers Selous is the longest running safari camp and is also, still, one of the best. One of the major selling points is the location....set right on the banks of the Rufiji River, it is possible to sip a G&T looking both east and west along this picturesque river.

Ras Nungwi Hotel

One of the older properties on the island, Ras Nungwi has long benefitted from being the last hotel on the coast up here and so has a stunning and secluded beach. As with many beaches around the headland, there is not much on offer at high tide, and quite a bit at low tide, but they do still have, arguably, one of the top beaches on the island.

Ras Kutani Hotel

Well, what is there to say about Ras Kutani Hotel? This has been one of our best selling properties for nearly a decade and it does not look like it will stop. As with a few other properties around Tanzania (Greystoke’s Mahale and Mwagusi spring to mind), there is something that they have just managed to get right at Ras Kutani.

Pongwe Beach Hotel

Located right at the southern end of the white sand that runs from Matemwe to Chwake, Pongwe Beach Hotel has, we would argue, managed to claim itself the best chunk of beach on the island! Featuring a permanent sand beach, complete with lapping waves and azure waters, there is very little to fault the location.

Plantation Lodge

As discussed in the Ngorongoro Sopa review, often the choice at the crater is whether to pay for the view (by staying on the crater rim) or for the accommodation (staying in the Highlands). In the case of staying in the Highlands, then we recommend Plantation Lodge.

Onsea House

After bursting onto the safari circuit in 2007, Onsea House has really shaken up the regular Arusha options and is still very much leading the way as far as we are concerned. This quaint little guesthouse is located on the way out of Arusha and looks out to the slopes of Mount Meru.

Oliver's Tented Camp

Named after the infamous guide and naturalist, Paul Oliver, Olivers Camp really is a camp to savour. Originally located a little further north, the camp is, today, located well away from the madding crowd and really is a top choice. What this luxury tented camp offers is the chance to really immerse yourself in the raw beauty of this great park.

Olakira Migration Camp

The sister camp to Sayari, Olakira Migration Camp is the roving alternative and, like Nomads, is a mobile tented camp. With this comes the flexibility and reliability of being near the game...but the drawback of losing some of the comfort of a permanent camp.

Nomad Serengeti Safari Camp

The only real competitor to Sayari camp and the other Asilia camps in northern Tanzania, Nomad Serengeti Camp has really led the way for the last 15 years or so in the Serengeti.

Mwagusi Camp

Without doubt our favourite camp in Ruaha, Mwagusi Camp is a rare occurrence these days...a camp where the owner is to be found almost year round, where the game is spectacular, where the food and service are impeccable and where you can truly feel at home.
